Life in Canada: Honest Truths

What you\'re really getting into. The good, bad, and cold realities.

❄️

Weather

-20 to -40°C in winter (this is REAL, prepare for it)

Winter is long (Nov-Mar). You NEED proper gear, snow boots, winter tires.

🏥

Healthcare

Free but SLOW. Family doctor shortage. Walk-in clinics.

ER wait times 4-8 hours. Find a family doctor ASAP. Dental/vision not covered.

🏠

Housing

Toronto/Vancouver expensive. Prairies affordable.

Toronto avg $800K+. Calgary $500K. Winnipeg $350K. Rent is 40-50% of income.

💼

Jobs

Strong in tech, healthcare, trades. Some professions need re-certification.

Engineers often need PEng certification. Doctors, lawyers, accountants need exams.

🇮🇳

Indian Community

1.8M+ Indians in Canada. Brampton is 60%+ South Asian.

Large community in GTA, BC, Calgary. Indian groceries, restaurants everywhere.

🔒

Safety

Very safe. Low crime. Gun control.

Safer than US, India. No gun violence concerns. Police responsive.

⚖️

Work-Life Balance

Better than US. Maternity leave 12-18 months.

2-3 weeks vacation standard. Generous parental leave. No hustle culture.

💰

Taxes

25-33% effective income tax. Higher than US.

Federal 15-33% + provincial 5-15% + sales tax 5-15%. Healthcare is "free".

The Winter Reality

This cannot be overstated: Canadian winter is harsh. -20 to -40°C is common in much of the country (except coastal BC). You MUST prepare:

  • • Winter boots, heavy coats, thermal layers (budget $500-1000)
  • • Snow tires (legal in winter, not just recommended)
  • • Block heater for your car
  • • Vitamin D supplements (seasonal depression is real)
  • • Humidifiers (heating dries out skin/sinuses)
