Ready to Master Your GRE?

This guide covers everything. Start with Step 1, follow the study plan, use the free resources, and you'll hit your target score without expensive coaching.

Common GRE Mistakes (Don't Make These)

✗ Memorizing Random Vocab

Learning obscure words instead of high-frequency ones. Waste of time. Learn 500 common words in context instead.

✗ Skipping Practice Tests

Studying sections in isolation doesn't prepare you for time pressure. Take full PowerPrep tests under timed conditions.

✗ Not Analyzing Mistakes

Taking practice tests but not reviewing errors. The review is where learning happens. Spend 2 hours reviewing for every 1 hour testing.

✗ Cramming Last Minute

Studying 10 hours the day before the test. Your brain needs rest. Light review 2 days before, then rest the final day.

✗ Relying on Paid Courses

Expensive coaching doesn't guarantee results. Free resources (PowerPrep + Gregmat + Official Guide) are better than $500 courses.

✗ Ignoring Time Management

Spending 5 minutes on hard questions instead of flagging them. Practice time management from day 1. ~1.7 min per question.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 8-12 weeks enough to score 320+?
Yes, if you study 2-3 hours daily and follow a structured plan. Most students who hit 320+ did so in 8-10 weeks. The key is consistency and focusing on weak areas, not grinding random problems.
Should I hire a tutor?
Only if you've hit a plateau (studied 10+ weeks, stuck below target). Most students don't need tutoring. Self-study with Gregmat+ ($5/mo) is better value. Tutoring costs ₹1,000-2,000/hour and rarely improves scores by more than 10-20 points.
Can I improve my GRE score by 30+ points with retake?
Yes, but only if you identify mistakes from your first attempt. Average improvement is 10-15 points. 30+ point jumps happen when you fix specific weak areas (e.g., learn a Quant topic you didn't know, improve time management). Review your first test for 2-3 weeks before retaking.
Do schools see all my GRE attempts?
With ScoreSelect, you choose which scores to send. Schools only see what you send. However, some schools may ask for all scores during verification as part of admission integrity checks. But initially, you control what's visible with ScoreSelect.
How important is the AWA essay score?
Less important than V + Q. Most schools want 3.5+, top schools want 4.0+. But unless your AWA is below 3, it won't hurt your chances. Focus on V and Q first. AWA is a tiebreaker, not a deciding factor.
How long are GRE scores valid?
GRE scores are valid for 5 years. If you take the test in March 2025, you can use that score for applications until March 2030. But most schools want scores no older than 3-4 years. Check your target school's policy.
